In this session, Broadcasting hate: The role of popular podcasts in anti 2SLGBTQIA+ rhetoric, Dr. Jaigris Hodson, Royal Roads University professor and Canada Research Chair in Digital Misinformation, Polarization, and Anti-Social Media, will explore how podcasting and podcasters can spread rhetoric that threatens sexual minorities in Canada. 

“Some of the world’s most popular podcasts boast a larger audience than mainstream media outlets like CNN,” Hodson notes. “This means that disinformation spreading 2SLGBTQIA+ hate and stereotypes matters greatly on these platforms.” 

Drawing on their research analyzing trans critical disinformation on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, she will explore how podcasting and podcasters can spread rhetoric that threatens sexual minorities in Canada, how these discourses are influencing young men in Canada right now, and what we might do to counter them. 

The event will feature a presentation followed by a conversation with Vice-President Academic and Provost Debora Linehan and a moderated Q&A.
