Jaigris is an associate professor at Royal Roads University and a Canada Research Chair in Digital Communication for the public interest. Her interdisciplinary research examines technology facilitated violence and abuse and how it impacts health care workers, COVID-19 and other health related communication, and ecological or relational approaches to understanding misinformation. In addition to her work here, she also partners with the social media lab and the diversity institute and has consulted on digital media strategy for a wide variety of public and private organizations.

Chandell is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Coordinator for The eQuality Project at the University of Ottawa. Before working on the eQuality Project, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC, and received her PhD in Media Studies from Western University in London, ON. Chandell’s research takes a feminist and interdisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of technology-facilitated violence and abuse, misinformation, and online extremist behavior. Shandell Houlden is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Royal Roads University in the School of Education and Technology. After completing a two-year fellowship at Royal Roads on the topic of COVID-19 online misinformation, her research now focuses primarily on education futures in times of crisis, including the misinformation and climate crises. Her work as a researcher and educator takes a systems-thinking approach, with an emphasis on feminist capitalist critique. In addition to her scholarly research, she works with her local municipality to develop climate action strategies that emphasize transformative education and climate justice for all.

Victoria O’Meara is a post-doctoral researcher at Royal Roads University in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies. She received her PhD in Media Studies from Western University. Her research draws from critical political economy and intersectional feminism to examine issues related to work, technology, reputation, and influence in the digital media economy.

Esteban's research area is widely concerned with digital culture + society, with a special interest in the processes by which citizens and communities learn, resist, and appropriate digital media. More specifically, he has experience studying data subjectivities, online violence, and digital literacies, among others.

Dr. Kaitlynn Mendes is an expert on issues around sexual violence relating to digital technologies, including how technology exacerbate the issues and how people creatively use it to fight back. With ever-increasing technological developments, and sexual violence rapidly taking on new forms, her research helps prepare young people for their digital futures. Dr. Mendes' research also has a global focus, exploring issues of gender inequality in many nations around the world, including Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, Singapore, the UK, and the U.S. She works closely with a range of stakeholders to develop resources for schools to tackle this issue through relationship and sex education curriculum. Building networks across North America and Europe, interventions stemming from this work have already reached thousands of educators, young people, and parents in the UK, Canada, and Ireland, with the capacity to reach hundreds of thousands more in years to come. She is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and reports. This includes three books including Digital Feminist Activism: Girls and Women Fight Back Against Rape Culture (2019), Feminism in the News (2011), and the award-winning SlutWalk: Feminism, Activism, and Media (2015). 

Mandy Lau is a PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics at York University, where she researches how governments, platforms, and civil society actors negotiate the governance of harmful speech online. Her research interests span digital policy, language and literacy, content moderation, and AI language ideologies. Before entering academia, Mandy spent over a decade in K-12 education as a vice-principal, curriculum consultant, and department head, and she brings that background in leadership, project management, and knowledge mobilization directly into her research practice.

Dr. George Veletsianos is the Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology. His research agenda is focused on addressing complex problems related to education and society, and is divided in two strands: (1) design, development, and evaluation of online and blended learning environments and (2) the study of learning experiences and participation in emerging online environments.

Mary Vallis Cowan is a professor of journalism at Centennial College in Toronto, where she guides post-graduate and undergraduate students as they explore multimedia storytelling and journalism.  She also works at CBC on the digital news desk as a writer and editor. She just completed a master’s degree in professional communication at Royal Roads University. Mary was previously a senior reporter at the National Post, as well as a senior editor at the Toronto Star.Mary also taught journalism at Rwanda’s national university through the Rwanda Initiative in 2007 and was a founding member of the National NewsMedia Council.

Yimin Chen holds a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario. His research examines the communicative practices of online communities and cultures, with a focus on Internet trolling behaviors and the controversy surrounding them. His previous work has ranged from fake news and deception detection, to online harassment, to the impact of political memes on social media.
